A Problem That Needed Solving
In my practice, I kept seeing the same scenario play out. People would come in with simple infections that could have been treated days or weeks earlier. When I asked why they waited, the answers were always similar: “There weren’t any appointments available,” “I couldn’t get time off work,” “Urgent care cost too much.”
The Lightbulb Moment
One busy afternoon in 2023, I treated five patients back-to-back with nearly identical sinus infections. Their symptoms were clear, the diagnosis was straightforward, and the treatment was simple. Yet each patient had waited many days to even get an appointment to see me.
That’s when it hit me: what if we could use AI to help diagnose and treat common infections, making care both faster and more affordable? The idea was to not replace doctors, but to handle routine cases that make up so much of our daily practice.

Dr. Tod Stillson is a board-certified family physician based in Indiana with more than 30 years of experience caring for patients across rural and underserved communities. Before entering medical school, Dr. Stillson completed graduate-level studies in Pharmacy designed to prepare him for advanced medical training, ultimately shaping his deep commitment to patient-centered, whole-person care.
As both a practicing physician and a healthcare innovator, Dr. Stillson is the inventor of the FDA-registered ChatMD Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) that powers the ChatRx telemedicine platform. His work integrates decades of clinical insight with advanced technology to create a safe, efficient, and accessible solution for delivering acute infection care to patients wherever they are.
