Managing flu symptoms effectively at home can make a significant difference in your comfort and recovery time. After years of treating flu patients, I’ve found that a combination of over-the-counter medications and natural remedies often works best.

For fever and pain relief, acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) can be highly effective. These medications reduce fever and alleviate the body aches that make flu so miserable. Always follow dosing instructions and be aware that ibuprofen may cause stomach irritation, especially when taken without food.

Decongestants like pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) can help clear nasal passages, though they should be used cautiously if you have high blood pressure. Cough suppressants containing dextromethorphan help with dry, hacking coughs, while expectorants with guaifenesin assist in clearing mucus.

Natural remedies can complement OTC medications effectively:

  • Honey (for those over 12 months old) soothes coughs and may have antimicrobial properties
  • Hot liquids like chicken soup or tea with honey reduce congestion and soothe irritated throat tissues
  • Saltwater gargles (1/4 teaspoon salt in 8 oz warm water) alleviate sore throat
  • Steam from a hot shower helps moisturize and clear nasal passages
  • Nasal saline sprays or rinses flush out virus particles and reduce congestion

Proper hydration is crucial during flu recovery—water, herbal teas, clear broths, and electrolyte drinks help prevent dehydration and thin mucus secretions.

Rest is perhaps the most important yet often overlooked remedy. Your body needs energy to fight the virus, so listen when it tells you to slow down.

What to avoid:

  • Alcohol (interferes with hydration and sleep)
  • Caffeine (can worsen dehydration)
  • Smoking or vaping (irritates airways)
  • Combining medications that contain the same active ingredients

If your symptoms worsen despite home care, ChatRx can help determine whether you need prescription treatment or other interventions.
